Low Country Boil Season Opener

As the Social Development Coordinator for Alexandria Community Rowing and a member of The Potomac Riverkeeper Network, Smith facilitated a collaboration between the two organizations to host the 2024 Low Country Boil Season Opener. The event gave rowers—who interact with the river daily—the opportunity to learn about the ongoing environmental challenges it faces, how these issues may impact their health, and the Riverkeeper Network's initiatives to address them. Dean Naujoks, for example, shared details about a recent settlement with the City of Alexandria, which resulted in the sealing of a pipe that had been leaking toxic sludge for over forty years beneath a pier near the boathouse. The settlement further required Alexandria to provide and mussel populations for implantation, to help filter the river's pollution. These actions led to the first "GOOD" water quality results at Oronocco Bay in 2024, and maintained the results throughout the season, per Potomac Riverkeeper water quality testing. The event allowed both groups to connect over homemade river fare, creating opportunities for ongoing collaboration and support throughout the rowing season.
